Description of OtShot virus (Adware Description)
First of all, users need to know what the OtShot is. Although, this program can provide picture editing or similar services, it is still classified as potentially unwanted program because of majority of malicious traits such as advertisements promotion, browser hijacking, homepage redirect, and malicious plugins addition. The OtShot itself is not a virus, but it is packed with some other malicious programs which threaten the online security of users.
Immediate impact of OtShot virus
The disadvantages of the OtShot are far more than its advantages. Once installed, the homepage of browser including Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome is redirected to mysearchresults.com and a search box named Search Here is created at the top of the webpage. It seems that users are forced to use the Search Here engine which disguises itself as a legit engine. In the reality, the Search Here can collect the terms of search queries, so as to promote advertisements in the search results. What’s more, some malicious links may also be displayed in the search results. If users incautiously click the malicious links, the computer can automatically download rootkits or Trojans contained in the malicious websites. The advertisements promotion and rootkits or Trojans downloads result in slowing the computer. That means users need more time to load a page or the browser even may be crashed.
Potential risk of OtShot virus
Besides the immediate impact as mentioned above, there are many potential risks of OtShot virus. The longer the plugins and add-ons created by the OtShot stay in the computer, the more dangerous the computer is. If the malicious plugins such as key logger or cookies get inside the computer, cyber criminals can monitor the online activities, record the browsing history and collect the privacy information of victims. Taking advantage of the OtShot, cyber criminals can easily control the victims’ computers and steal the privacy data such as credit card number, bank account, password, etc. As a result, victims run the risk of losing money. So, it is highly recommended you get rid of it immediately.
